R&D Agents

Hi Guys, I've shamelessly stolen this from Sha Kharn ex-STK guy.

I hope it helps. I'm not sure how up to date it is. Suggestions of changes/improvements welcome.

R&D Agents

Access to R&D agents works just like with any other agents - they belong to a corporation, and you need a certain standing with that corporation to access them. Most corporations with R&D agents will also have courier missions and kill missions to grind faction on. You will want to at least use Level 3 agents, as the amount of RP per day you get is based on the agent level, which means grinding to 5-7 standing.

Each agent has a list of fields that the agent can research, you must have the corresponding skill trained to 1 to research with an agent, but you should eventually get it up to Level 4 to get more RP. You can only research with one agent at a time. If you decide to stop researching with an agent, you will lose all accumulated RP with that agent. You can increase the number of agents you can research with at a time with the skill Research Project Management, I recommend getting this skill to Level 4, Level 5 takes upwards of 40 days with good Memory and Charisma since it is a Rank 8 skill.


Research Points

The agent you are researching with will give you a certain number of Research Points per day. You "buy" datacores with them.

These RP were once used to get Tech 2 BPOs via a lottery system, but this is no longer the case as of Revelations 2.1.

Here is the formula for calculating the number of RP you will receive per day

RP/day = Field multiplier * (1 + (Agent's Effective Quality/100)) * ((Field Skill Level + Agent's Level)^2)

Field multiplier - for some reason, certain fields give more RP than others, this makes no difference as to your odds of getting a BPO, in fact it probably makes them lower by attracting people that think more RP==more chance of BPO.

Agent's Effective Quality - Ranges from -20 to 20, and modifies your daily RP by a percentage equal to the quality, each level of Negotiation raises this value by 5. IMPORTANT: WHENEVER YOU TRAIN ANOTHER LEVEL IN NEGOTIATION YOU MUST START A CONVERSATION WITH YOUR AGENT(S) BEFORE THE GAME WILL RECOGNIZE THE INCREASED RP/DAY VALUE. YOU CAN DO THIS REMOTELY.

Example:

So if we research Graviton Physics (2x Multiplier) with a Level 4 Q18 Agent, with Graviton Physics Skill at 4 and Negotiations at 4 we receive:

(2 * (1 + ( (18+(4*5)) / 100)) * (4 + 4)^2) = 2 * 1.38 * 64 = 176.64 RP/day

If we train Negotiation to 5 (Rank 2), this becomes:

2 * 1.43 * 64 = 183.04 RP/day

If we train Graviton Physics to 5 (Rank 5) this becomes:

2 * 1.38 * 81 = 223.56 RP/day

So as you can see, generally it is more worthwhile to train up the field skill over Negotiation. However,if you decide to research 5 different fields with Research Project Management 4, it is probably a better idea to train each field skill to 4 and train up Negotiation to 5

Every day your agent will offer you a stupid courier mission. Rejecting or failing this mission has no consequence. If you complete it, you get double the RP for that day. If you are around, you might as well do the mission, but usually you won't be hanging out in regions with R&D agents, so generally you shouldn't bother.

Necessary Skills

Field Specific Skills

To begin research, you must train a field specific skill. Each field specific skill requires Science 5 and either Electronics, Engineering or Mechanic trained to level 5. As far as efficiency goes, a Mechanic skill is probably less worthwhile, since fittings skills are generally more useful to have at 5.

The agents list of predictable BPOs just means the BPOs that CCP is currently seeding. As of Revelations 2.1, all fields now show nothing predictable, and there have been statements from CCP to the effect that the BPO lottery is very much over.

If you cannot find the agent you are looking for below (you may want to look for a level 3 agents, or maybe I misspelled something)

* Click People & Places Icon (left side menu)
* Change the "Search Type" to corporation
* In the "Search String" type in one of the above named corps (you don't need to type it all in).
* When the box appears with the corp listed, right click on it and select "show info".
* In the Corp information box click the "Agents" tab
* Click the expand arrow (right hand side) on the R&D line.
* Expand the window fully and you will see a list of R&D agents and where they are.
* Click "show info" and go to the agent info tab
* Here you will see a listing of the fields the agent researches and your required standing

Recommended skillpath to follow

Best builds post-Revelations are possibly Minmatar - Industry - Prospector for Science 5/Engineering 3 or Minmatar - Industry - Engineer for Science 4/Engineering 5/Research 3 if you are going for an Engineering requirement field.

The true best build post-revelations is gallente - intaki - reborn - industry - engineer: +3int +2mem. This gets you both mechanic 5 and engineering 5, more applicable starting skillpoints than any other path. You have decent int, mem and cha. Your per/will sucks but you'll never train per/will skills.

Implants are cheap enough now that you should always use +3s (int, mem, cha) for empire alts that will never get podded.

Learning skills (Advanced Memory IV, Advanced Intelligence IV, Learning IV, Basic Charisma IV - or Advanced Charisma IV if you are going to do Research project management 5)

Let EVEMon choose the learning skills for you, the above is probably a bit much if you're only doing a month or two of total training.

If you are deciding to use Implants

* Train Infomorph Psychology I.
* Get a jump clone so you don't end up losing your implants after the grind.
* Train Science I-III and Cybernetics I when you have Basic Memory, Intelligence, and learning at IV
* Plug in implants

Social I (Optional II-III & Connections I-III for a faster faction grind)
Science I-V (Achura path starts you with this)
Electronics, Engineering or Mechanic I-V
Field Skill I-IV
Negotiation I-II
Research I-V (Achura path starts you at III)

Nice guide there Dage, well stolen :p

Only thing I would say it is missing is what you can get out of the RP (datacores) and their uses. Might make it more attractive to have some figures in there for that mebbe?

Maybe this should be merged with my post........
Which R&D Agents are most profitable which gives an indication of the most profitable fields, and what they can be worth
I keep my own stats up to date periodically, and change fields or agents too. But I didnt bother to update, cos I didnt think there was any interest in it :/
